The explosive, basaltic Katla eruption in 1918, south Iceland II. Isopach map, ice cap deposition of tephra and layer volume

چکیده
Due to poor preservation and lack of proximal tephra thickness data, no comprehensive isopach map has existed for the layer from major eruption Katla volcano in 1918. We present such a obtained by combining existing data on 1918 soil profiles with newly acquired 590 km2 My?rdalsjökull ice cap which covers caldera its outer slopes. A 20–30 m surface vents is inferred photos taken 1919. The greatest thicknesses presently observed, 30–35 cm, occur where outcrops lowermost parts ablation areas Kötlujökull Sólheimajökull outlet glaciers. fallout location within exposed both glaciers, as estimates balance velocities imply lateral transport since ~15 km Kötlujökull, ~11 about 2 Sléttjökull. Models of ice melting and edifice growth at the onset of subglacial basaltic eruptions
[1] Models of the early stages of basaltic eruptions beneath temperate glaciers are presented that consider the evolving sizes of volcanic edifices emplaced within subglacial cavities. The cavity size reflects the competing effects of enlargement by melting and closure by downward ductile deformation of the ice roof, which occurs when the cavity pressure is less than glaciostatic due to meltwat...
متن کاملDeformation Due to Magma Movement and Ice Unloading at Katla Volcano, Iceland, Detected by Persistent Scatterer Insar
Katla volcano is situated in the south of Iceland, and is largely covered by the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Historically, Katla is one of the most active of Iceland’s volcanoes, with 20 eruptions in the last 1100 years, the last one being in 1918. The proximity of populated areas and international flight paths makes prediction of the timing and character of any future eruption particularly importan...

Influence of volcanic tephra on photovoltaic (PV)-modules: an experimental study with application to the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption, Iceland
Large volcanic eruptions may lead to significant tephra dispersion, crossing borders and affecting distant and industrial societies in various ways. While the effects of volcanic ash clouds on the aviation industry have been recognized, damaging effects on the photovoltaic energy sector are poorly investigated. Here we describe the influence of volcanic tephra deposition on photovoltaic (PV) mo...
